Hamas Will Release a US Soldier After Direct Talks With Trump Administration

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced on Sunday in a statement that it will release US-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander after direct talks with US officials.

According to Hamas, is aimed to intensify efforts to “achieve a ceasefire, open border crossings, and allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.”

Although he did not specify when he would release Alexander, he stressed his willingness to “immediately engage in intensive negotiations and make serious efforts to reach a final agreement that will end the war.”

According to the statement, Hamas would agree that an independent technical committee be set up to administer the Gaza Strip “so as to ensure continued calm and stability for many years” in the devastated Palestinian territory.

In addition, Hamas assured that the new ceasefire agreement would include an exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners and a lasting peace in the enclave allowing its reconstruction and the end of the blockade of access to goods it suffers.

Edan Alexander is the only living hostage with US citizenship of the 59 captives left in Gaza. The Israeli authorities estimate that 24 are still alive, although in recent days the Israeli press has reported that there are doubts about the true situation of three of them.

In October 2023, Israel launched its offensive on the Gaza Strip, which lasts until today and has claimed the lives of more than 52,800 people, In addition to having the population with blockades of access to goods such as food or medicines subjected to an increasingly pressing humanitarian crisis.
